Dr Zane Farina

Chief Specialist


Zane has been the Chief Specialist in Pietermaritzburg since July 2005, ensuring the development of a strong metropolitan wide service at all three hospitals. The department remains the single biggest Intern and Diploma in Anaesthesia training site in the country, with growth in the registrar and ICU fellow training programs. Zane is a National Assessor for the NCCEMD and a driving force in the Obstetric Anaesthesia Special Interest Society (OASIS) sub group, formed under SASA. His main interests include maximising training systems and the assessment of perioperative mortality.

Dr Richard von Rahden

Head Clinical Unit Greys ICU


Richard is an anaesthesiologist and subspecialist intensivist and is the Head Clinical Unit of Greys ICU. He will be co-ordinating the Department’s FCA(1) course and various other education and training programmes. His major interests are emergency and acute critical care, resuscitation, trauma anaesthesia, and the development of educational protocols for these areas. He is chairperson of the Grey’s Hospital Resuscitation Committee.

Dr David Bishop

Dave is an anaesthesiologist working at at District Office and an Edendale. He is a member of the UKZN Perioperative Research Group, with current interests in obstetric anaesthesia, burns anaesthesia and autonomic dysfunction. He is also  part of the newly formed Obstetric Anaesthesia Special Interest Society.


Dr Dela Maiwald

Clinical Manager Northdale Anaesthesia


Dela has been working in anaesthesia since 2000. Working as the clinical manager of Northdale Hospital since 2012, Dela is committed to improving the service delivery to patients needing theatre intervention at the grass roots level in district hospitals. She believes that the challenges faced in resource poor environments offer a different learning experience and builds anaesthesiologists independent functioning and triaging skills.
